Some of my favourite environmental/conservation quotes

Missed Earth Day (22 April) but anyway here’s a short collection of quotes that inspire me.

Baba Dioum quote

In the end, we will conserve only what we love. We will love only what we understand. We will understand only what we are taught. – Baba Dioum

Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world: indeed it's the only thing that ever has.

There is a delight in the hardy life of the open. There are no roads that can tell the hidden spirit of the wilderness that can reveal its mystery, its melancholy and its charm. The nation behaves well if it treats the natural resources as assets which it must turn over to the next generation increased and not impaired in value. Conservation means development as much as it does protection.

We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors; instead we borrow it from our children. - Moses Henry Cass

We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children. – Moses Henry Cass (as opposed to the usual “Native American saying”)

Only when the last tree has died, and the last river has been poisoned, and the last fish has been caught will we realise that we can’t eat money. – Cree proverb (Image from here)

The Earth does not belong to man; man belongs to the Earth. This we know. All things are connected like the blood which unites one family. Whatever befalls the Earth befalls the sons of the Earth. Man did not weave the web of life, he is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself.” – Chief Seattle (Image from here)

I’m sure I missed out lots more, leave a comment if you think there should be some that definitely deserve to be included!

Also, while it is called Earth Day, the sun is what makes everything possible really. So here’s a pretty awesome hour-long BBC clip on 24 Hours on Earth.

A good list, I’d also include one from Rachel Carson who wrote ‘Silent Spring’.

Hi Fi, I’ve yet to read Silent Spring, though it is definitely on my reading list! I’m sure there will be many good quotes, what’s your favourite?

      • Fi Brown says:

Hi Jocelyn, so many good ones and not just from SS. This is perhaps the best from SS:
“Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts. There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature — the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter.”

There are many others too, but happy reading 😀.
