Climate and sustainability

Attended the Cambridge Climate & Sustainability Forum as a participant for the first time today, having been in the organising committee the past two years. And I must say, it’s pretty good being able to fully enjoy the talks without worrying about running overtime, the catering, the arrival/departure of speakers and random other things 😛

This year’s theme ‘Climate Change: Culture Change’ comes close to discussing the things I think are most crucial. We know the science, we know the implications but what really must we do to tackle this issue? Do we need a fundamental change in the way our society, our current socio-politic-economic system works? Accordingly, there appears to be a lot more campaigning, individual and collective action, and political issues mentioned over the day.

I’ve compiled the tweets from the day on Storify and I don’t really have much else to comment, I agree with most of what the speakers have said, and disagree with others. Seems like most people think the current system could help save us from falling off the cliff, but we just need more resolve and political will to do what we know we need to do. I personally still think we need to move away from neo-liberal capitalism which drives rampant consumerism etc which is the ultimate reason why we’re having all these problems we have today (or am I going too far in saying that) but wells. I can’t figure a better solution to it, and I have essays to write.

Also, if you want to reference to past conferences, 2014 theme was The Heat is On: Innovations Now! and 2013 theme was Local Action. Global Change?
