Another back-dated post. I actually have a number

World Environment Day was on 4 June 2011, and I spent the morning at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve with Toddycats.
Toddycats had a booth set up, with specimens on display on organisms found in the mangroves.

Before the people started streaming in, a call went out that the resident crocodile was spotted from the bridge! So we ran over to catch a look. She (if I remember correctly, it was a female..) was quite far away in the water though, and with my lousy compact camera, I couldn’t get a clear shot.

But that’s alright, we had one that we could look at all we wanted.

Apart from taxidermised specimens (preserved dead specimens), we also had live ones.

It was there so that we could explain to the visitors the difference between male and female crabs; to let them guess which was which. I should have taken a photo of their abdomen instead But in any case, the males have a more triangular flap while the females’ is larger and rounder, to hold the eggs. I’m not sure if it’s really called a flap, but wells, shan’t be too technical about this.
So the visitors came in and were brought on a guided walk by SBWR volunteers with NParks. When they dropped by our booth, we talked to them about the animals that can be found in our mangroves, especially in Sungei Buloh. I was stationed more or less at the crabs area, and trying to learn as much as I could from this guy from NUS who studied crabs. I cannot recall his name at the moment >< There was also a group of NUS High students, who knew a lot! My brain probably can’t hold half as much info as they know (something about holes in skulls of reptiles). Met more toddycat volunteers as well(:
Then went for the talk by Siva on mangrove stories. Always interesting to listen to his stories.
After the talk, I had to leave though the event wasn’t totally over. But it was a pretty good experience, first time at an outreach booth with toddycats!
